how does your baby learn something his relationships with other people? When does it start to make friends? It all starts with you! As a mother and father, you are the first playmate of your child. They become his best friends. Your baby will squeal with joy when it hears your voice, sees your face and feels your touch. With your help, your child will get used to other people and also enjoy their company. This is the beginning of social competence.

In what time frame will my baby develop social skills?

Your baby's social skills are growing steadily between the ages of one and three. Right from birth, your child learns to adapt to and respond to the people around him.

In the first year, your baby learns many motor skills (grasping and lifting things up, running and other things). At the same time, it also learns a lot about his relationship with you, his parents. Your child will feel comfortable and enjoyable in the presence of others, but it will clearly favor you and your partner.

Around the age of 2, your baby will start playing with other children. But just as usual, it will learn to interact by trying out whether something works or not. In the beginning it will not want to share his toy. Later, your child learns to empathize with others. And at the age of three, the little ones can make friends with other children.

How is development going?

In the first month

Even newborns are social beings. They are often touched, held, addressed and smiled. With just five months, your child will dare to do their own experiments and try out what it feels like to see different faces. It will look at you and maybe even copy your facial expressions: guess what your baby will do if you stick his tongue out!

At Two Months

During this time, your little one will be watching closely all around him when awake. And maybe you will experience his first, toothless smile - an enchanting moment for all parents!

At Three Months

Soon, your baby will become an expert in ""smile language"" and begin a ""conversation"" by smiling at you while making gurgling sounds. Do not forget to always answer and have a ""conversation"" with your sweetheart.

The first face-to-face games are already doing well too, such as ""cuckoo"" or tickling under the chin.

At Four Months

Your baby is now more open to new people and welcomes them with happy sounds. Still, nobody can compete with mom or dad at this age. Your baby has his most exuberant reactions ready for you alone. This is a sure sign that there is a close connection between you.

At seven months

If your baby gets more mobile, it's likely to be of concern to other babies. Nevertheless, this is limited at a glance or a brief touch. From time to time babies are smiling or chuckling, or even imitating the other child's sounds. But above all, they are still busy with themselves and everything there is to learn.

If you place two babies under a year next to each other with toys, they usually play side by side, but not with each other. Most of the time your baby is too busy learning all the new skills to deal with a playmate. Children of this age like their family best of all. Sometimes they are even afraid of people they do not know. Fremdeln is quite normal.

At 12 months

Towards the end of the first year, your child may feel very anxious: it cries when you are not around or when you give it to someone other than your partner. Many children experience separation fears that are worst between the tenth and eighteenth months. Your child would love to be alone and become whiny if you are not around. Only when you are with him, it is calm.

Between 13 and 23 months

infants are much more interested in their environment. But it is still all about the question of how things are related to them. As your child learns to speak and communicate with others, it will also learn how to make friends. It will be fun to be with other children, no matter if they are the same age or older.

Between one and two years, however, children watch with fervor for their own toys. This can be difficult for parents who would like to educate their child to share. You may also be watching your child mimic friends or watch what the other kids are doing for a long time. Your child will claim your own independence by refusing to hold your hand while walking down a street, for example. And maybe it'll get a tantrum if you forbid it.

Between 24 and 36 months

Children between the ages of two and three often become more self-centered. They are not yet able to imagine other people's position and do not yet understand that others have feelings as well. But over time, they learn to share and alternate, and sometimes even have one or two best friends.

How is my child progressing?

Children value human society and are attracted to it, and especially to other children. As your toddler grows up, she learns how to behave best to others, and feels more comfortable in those situations. Children grab a lot by watching and interacting with other children. As your child develops compassion for other children and realizes how much fun it is to play together, the foundation is for true and lasting friendships.

How can I help my child develop social skills?

Spend a lot of time with your baby! Talk to him and look at it directly. This is especially important during the first few months. Your little one loves your attention and enjoys making faces. Invite friends and relatives! Babies love visiting, young and old alike. And especially when they are completely entranced at the sight of him.

Do I have to worry if my child is alienating?

If your child is alienating, you should not be embarrassed or irritated. This is normal for babies around the age of seven months. They just get nervous when they are in the company of strangers. If your child begins to cry in the arms of a distant relative, then take your child back into your arms. Then try to get your child used to the stranger.

Wait for the little one to feel well in her arms while the other person is around. After that, he or she can talk or play with your child while holding it in his arms. Give the child your child for a brief moment and stay close. Finally, try to leave the room for a few minutes. If your child is crying, take it back on your arm. And try it another time.

Toddlers benefit greatly when other children are around them. Invite friends to play, but make sure everyone has enough to play: your child may find it difficult to share at this age.

My two-year-old often feels selfish. Did we do something wrong?

If you have a two-year or three-year-old child who seems selfish, then do not worry too much about whether you may have spoiled it. At this age, children are inherently selfish. Nevertheless, you should take the opportunity to show your child how it should behave. If you say ""please"" and ""thank you,"" if you do not save on praise, and if you share with others, then your child will set an example.

Join a playgroup, music school, or gymnastics club so that your child meets other children there. In many sports clubs also mother-child gymnastics is offered (of course also applies to father-child!). It will quickly learn how to make and keep friendships and enjoy an active social life.

Which behavior should you be worried about?

You should consult your pediatrician or pediatrician if

  • your child does not care about anyone for a year other than you and your partner, no matter how hard you try.
  • Your one-year-old child also does not interact with you.
  • Your child between the ages of one and three years is overly aggressive and unable to play with other children without biting, kicking or hitting.

This behavior can be caused by anxiety or insecurity, and your parent or pediatrician may know how to meet your child's difficulties and needs. Infants sometimes go through a period in which they behave like a mini ""Count Dracula"" and bite their playmates. But that's mostly because they want to try out what they can do with their teeth.

When it comes to defending one's toy, every child can become mean. But it is unusual for a child to behave aggressively.
