Why do I get calf or thigh cramps at night?Similar to running, having a heated tennis match or standing for a long time, pregnancy can also lead to cramps in the calf and thighs. This is due to the extra weight the leg muscles have to carry, but it can also be an indication of a lack of trace elements (eg magnesium). Unpleasant, the cramps often occur at night and rip you rudely out of sleep. Most violent are leg cramps in the second and last third of the pregnancy.
Other possible causes of leg cramps during pregnancy are:
- too much phosphorus (which is contained in ready meals, snacks and carbonated soft drinks)
- a lack of calcium in the blood
- the pressure of stretching Uterus on the nerves leading to the legs.
What can I do about the pain? Fortunately, calf cramps are the sort of pregnancy discomfort you can do something about. If you have a cramp:
Stretching: Start by stretching the leg heel forward, then gently move the joint and toes. This will hurt first, but then eliminate the pain.
- Massage the cramping muscle.
- Take a warm bath or put a hot water bottle on the affected area.
- Move: A few minutes walking will help.
- Can I do something to prevent cramps?
Stretch your muscles before going to bed. If you stretch the calf muscles several times as described above, the cramps can be avoided altogether.
- Avoid standing or sitting cross-legged.
- Circle your ankles and wave your toes while sitting - at work, while eating, watching TV.
- Eat foods that contain a lot of calcium (eg milk). If you have problems with leg cramps, ask your doctor for calcium and magnesium tablets. But avoid tablets containing extra dolomite or bone meal. It is also often found in lead, which can harm your baby via the placenta.
- Avoid soft drinks that contain a lot of phosphorus.
- What to do if the pain lasts?
If the pain is no longer spasmodic but constant, then go to the doctor. This is also true if you notice swelling or soft spots on the legs. You could then have a venous thrombosis or a blood clot. This is rare - on average once every 2,000 pregnancies, but it is serious and requires immediate medical attention.
